School Council

Mile Oak School Council, or The Mini Mile Oakers was formed to give all children in the school a chance to have their say in aspects of school life that affect them. Everyone has an opinion and this is the children’s chance to express theirs!

In addition, learning to develop the confidence to say what you think in a positive way - and indeed learning what you think! - is an important life skill and so we hope that our council will encourage children to develop this skill.

Councillors are voted in at the beginning of the year by their class. Children select one boy and one girl from their class to act as their representative for the year. We have agreed to meet once every half – term to discuss and share ideas and have fun!

At our last two meetings, we decide to focus on relationships within the school. Children in both Key Stage 1 and 2 discussed the need for a Friendship Bench in both the Infant and Junior playgrounds. This wouldn’t just be a place for people needing a friend but a place to meet old friends and make new ones!

We have yet to organise a competition to design the benches – we think we will focus on using found materials for these. In addition, we hope to invite a councillor from the Youth Council of Great Britain to talk to us about their work and give us some ideas, too!
