Year 4
This half term, our History topic is the Roman Invasion of Britain. Already, we have been visited by Legion XIIII, who gave the children an insight into Roman Army life.
Towards the end of the half term, the children will participate in ‘a day in the life of a Roman or Celt’, when they will dress up and enjoy typical Roman activities.
Numeracy
We have been developing our skills in place value, tables, number bonds and using numberlines. We are also improving our addition and subtraction methods and relating these to money. We are encouraging the children to make estimates and to increase their range of mental strategies. We will also be looking at 2-D and 3-D shapes and their properties.
Literacy
The children have been using their creative skills to write monster poems. They are currently using those skills in developing character and setting in narrative. They will be developing their instructional writing towards the end of the term. The children visit the library weekly and are encouraged to take books home and to bring their own books to school.
Science
We have been studying the skeletons of a variety of animals in our topic ‘Moving and Growing’. The children enjoyed examining and drawing bones from the Booth Museum collection. They are also using the topic to develop their scientific enquiry skills. After half term, we will be ‘Keeping Warm’!
