PE and Sport

'Our children leave Mile Oak with no limit to their sporting potential. The school family offers the children a broad spectrum of sporting opportunities both within and outside the curriculum. Every child is encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Sportsmanship and respect for the opponent remain at the core of all our sporting activity.'

At Mile Oak, pupils receive two hours of high-quality Physical Education each week as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. The programme provides children with opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork and resilience through a wide range of activities. These include invasion games such as basketball, as well as creative and expressive activities such as dance and gymnastics. The curriculum also includes cycling and skateboarding, allowing pupils to develop balance, coordination and confidence through alternative physical activities. Further information about the sports and activities taught throughout the year can be found in the PE Overview below.

We aim for every child to be physically active for at least one hour each day. Alongside timetabled PE lessons, pupils have access to a wide range of sporting opportunities during break and lunchtime. Our outdoor environment includes a Daily Mile running track, which pupils can use during lunchtimes and lesson time to further increase their daily activity levels and promote healthy lifestyles.

At Mile Oak, we place a strong emphasis on developing pupils’ physical literacy. Through a progressive curriculum, children build the confidence, competence, motivation and understanding needed to take part in a wide variety of physical activities. By developing these key skills and positive attitudes towards movement, we aim to foster a lifelong love of physical activity, encouraging pupils to remain active and make healthy lifestyle choices beyond their time at primary school.

Our commitment to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles was recently recognised when Mile Oak was named runner-up in the Active School of the Year award. This achievement reflects the school’s strong culture of participation, the wide range of opportunities provided for pupils to be active and our ongoing commitment to ensuring that all children develop positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity.

Extra-curricular sport is an important part of physical activity at Mile Oak. We offer a variety of clubs to encourage participation and develop pupils’ interests and skills beyond the curriculum. Current clubs include football, dance, multisports, basketball and karate.

Pupils in Key Stage Two also have opportunities to represent the school in competitive events and sports festivals, enabling them to experience a range of sports and develop confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship while representing their school.
